WINEMAKER NOTES:

2018 was a perfect vintage from a weather standpoint. Cooler nights and mild daytime temperatures in August helped to retain the beautiful natural acidity and delicate flavors and aromas of the fruit. The excellent weather conditions allowed for less irrigation and longer hang time for the grapes. This helped gain more concentration of fruit character in the wine during fermentation. We were able to pick at the perfect time in sugar, flavor, color, and tannin ripeness without losing acidity.

TASTING NOTES:

The 2018 1886 Ehlers Estate is a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from different blocks on the Estate. There are a total of six clones of Cabernet Sauvignon planted at the Estate vineyard: 4, 8, 15, 169, 337, and See. I’ve selected the best barrels from these lots for this blend, and the custom 1886 bottle is back – a unique wine deserves a special bottle! With a deep red-purple layer of color, the aroma of boysenberries, wild blackberries, dark cherries, and cassis with nuances of dry herbs, cedar, and spice rack. Firm tannins in the mouth, the taste is sweeter, with some white chocolate, mocha, and thyme. The finish is long and earthily mineral. Full body with smooth, balanced acidity. Enjoyable now, but better to wait some years. Aging potential: 15-20 years.
